Healthy Lifestyle STEM Integrated Project

This unit focuses on the various components of a healthy lifestyle which include nutrition and exercise and their benefits to body systems/homeostasis. Moreover, students will research the adverse effects of poor health choices in conjunction with the critical analysis of The Great Gatsby. The culminating project: Student teams will research, create, produce and present a multimedia Healthy Lifestyle Education Project to local elementary students. This demographic was selected in an effort to address a local community health concern; childhood obesity and childhood diabetes. Additionally, this project affords students the opportunity to explore the field of Public Health while acquiring hands on experience in the creation and delivery of health education topics. Assessment is based on a grading rubric created based on criteria for project. By the conclusion of this project students will acquire the following skills: Identification of basic structure, functions and nutritional needs of three systems of movement (Skeletal, Muscle and Nervous Systems). Interpretation and application of Dietary Guidelines for Americans Implementation of recommendations from USDA myplate.gov Effective Teamwork Skills Effective Oral/Presentation Communication Skills Health Literacy Skills Locating, evaluating, understanding and communicating health education topics. In the Science class, students will be exploring the nutritional needs required by the body for optimal efficiency. The effects of sleep deprivation, components of wellness along with the benefits of choosing to live a healthy lifestyle are the topics/ knowledge acquired in the CTE Medical Services Occupations course. The English component of this project involves the students creating a script complete stage directions. Students will be also be required to create posters that advertise their upcoming presentations. Provide a list of relevant careers: Nutritionist Public Health Educator Physical Therapist Nurse Physician Personal Trainer In addition to the Health Science and Medical Technology (CTE/STEM focus) of the Healthy Lifestyle Stem integrated lesson, educators will find academic lessons in English and Anatomy and Physiology that supplement the primary core area of study. This unit is brought to you by Patricia Manning (Medical Services Occupation), Dennis Soto (Anatomy and Physiology), and Kristal LeRoy (English Language-Arts) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by Sheri Coburn.
