Graphic Animals for a Zoo - Media Design 2 PBL Project

After "Illustrator Practice" unit, students work in groups to design a cohesive set of animal graphics that a zoo can use on their website, on merchandise, for signage in front of exhibits, etc. A fictitious zoo called "True Zoo" has written to the students requesting their assistance on the designs and has provided some guidelines. Students pitch their design ideas to the "Zoo board members." Programs used: -Adobe Illustrator to create the graphic animals. They can use any program or platform for their presentation. -Some may use Photoshop to show the Zoo board what the designs could potentially look like on merchandise Activities include: -Review of elements and principles of design -Gestalt principles -Color psychology (students have already been introduced to color theory) -Sketching -Critiquing -Pitching ideas Outcome is a competition where students pitch their design ideas to the fictitious Zoo. If possible, winning designs could be produced on actual merchandise- poster, t-shirt, mug, etc. Skills covered in this project are used in the following careers: -Graphic Designer -Illustrator -Multimedia Artist -Art director Approximately 4 weeks
