Going Viral: From Social Justice to Social Media PBL Project

In this project, students will learn about the social justice issues that exist in the world and then explore which social justice issues resonate with them. Then, through a study of social media, viral messaging, jobs in social media and social media marketing campaigns, students will have the tools to be proactive and fight for the issues they are more passionate about through a social media viral push for a local organization with the same interests. Lesson 1: Students will explore what social justice issues are and which ones are currently popular. They will pick one that they really care about and explore why it is important to them in comparison to the ones that the rest of the world care about. Lesson 2: Students will explore what it means for a message to go "viral" online and offline or word of mouth. This lesson will help when creating their own marketing campaign in the final lesson. Lesson 3: Students will explore what types of social media jobs are available and which ones might fit them. They will then explore what some of the requirements are in preparation for the job that they will be taking on for the social justice organization they choose. Final Lesson: Students will pick an organization and create a social media campaign and package for a social justice client. This unit is brought to you by William Abanyie with support from the CTE Online Curriculum Leadership Team and detailed coordination provided by Team Lead Gayle Nicholls-Ali.
