Creating a Martian Society STEM Integrated Project

As the 10th grade capstone experience, students will work in interdisciplinary teams to create a Martian colony that incorporates learning from core curricular areas. The project will culminate in a "colonist recruitment fair" in which students will try to convince student stakeholders to join their colony on Mars. Engineering: Design and construct a model of a sustainable habitat that allows colonists to survive and thrive on Mars. Social Science: Create a constitution for their colony which includes a plan for the colony’s economics, political, and legal system, and a colonist Bill of Rights. Language Arts: Create a Martian dialect, language, custom, and social norms. Develop a book of common phrases and a recruitment video including those components. Mathematics: Research and analyze a US city’s population and growth. Model the growth trends to predict how population growth will impact initial and future resources in the colony. This unit is brought to you by Nancy Brown (Engineering), Matthew Gold (Social Science), Renee Brown (Language Arts), and Rebeka Luu (Math) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Mina Greas.
