In this project, students will be using a simulation tool to see how four variables (amplitude, frequency, phase, and damping) influence the artwork produced by the harmonograph machine. Each phase of the project reveals an essential component of the machine. Students must thoughtfully follow a line of inquiry questions to discover how the component operates. Students must produce a few lines of code to either influence or fix the harmonic simulation during each stage. The project culminates with students creating their own artwork with the machine that they've built up along the way.
This project has strong interdisciplinary connections across math, art, and computer science. It encourages a deep level of curiosity and subsequent investigation into the harmonic functions observable all around us.
This project is brought to you by Derrick McMillen with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by Team Lead Josh Bradley.
