In this project students will explore how climate change is impacting the world's coffee supply and advocate for specific growth conditions. In order to do this students will learn about photosynthesis, the role of light in plant production and cellular respiration, growing conditions and challenges facing coffee production and the global impact of sustainable coffee production.
Lessons in this Sustainable Agriculture Biology project include:
Lesson 1- Plant Processes: Photosynthesis- students will learn about the process of photosynthesis, review with a game and write a song for memorization purposes.
Lesson 2- What's Light Got to Do With It?- students will test light's effect on photosynthesis, read an article about photosynthesis and design their own experiments.
Lesson 3- Plant Processes: Cellular Respiration- students will learn about the process of respiration, perform a lab to locate glucose and write an essay comparing the processes of photosynthesis and respiration
Lesson 4- Coffee Production project- students will determine the best conditions for growing coffee through research and experimentation and then advocate for their position via a memo to the Internationals Coffee Growers Association.
This project is brought to you by Crystal Grooms with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Laura Gallardo.
