Cupcake Wars PBL Project

Since their creation, cupcakes have become a pop culture trend in the culinary world. Cupcakes is a small cake to be eaten by one person. Cupcakes started with original flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry but have evolved to having unique flavors like cherry cola, and salted caramel chocolate. There are cookbooks, blogs, and magazines specifically dedicated to cupcakes and even television shows. In 2009, Food Network premiered Cupcake Wars. Cupcake Wars is a reality competition series, which is based on creating unique and professional style cupcakes. This project is based on Cupcake Wars, students will plan their own cupcakes wars, learn about unique ingredients to add to cupcakes, create unique cupcakes, learn and make the frosting and finally showcase their own creations in their own cupcake wars. Lesson 1: Student will watch an episode of Food Network's Cupcake Wars to help with the planning stage of their very own cupcake wars. Lesson 2: Students will make their own unique and creative cupcake. Lesson 3: Students will learn about the nine different types of frosting and then create the frosting for their cupcake war. Lesson 4: Students will learn about being a judge and being a judge to help establish an understanding of the judging of their own cupcake wars. This project is brought to you by Alyssa Agin with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by Team Lead Gregg Witkin.
