Virtual Reality and the Immigrant Crisis STEM Integrated Project

This project will explore the dynamics of immigration, and the impact that immigrants have on populations, using a multidisciplinary approach (Graph Communication, Math, World Languages and Biology). In Graphic Design, students will explore the issues related to immigration. Exploration will include why people move to a new country, city, state; what tools are needed to survive; and how can residents guide immigrants through the exploration of their new reality. Lastly, how can augmented reality teach immigrant survival skills? In Math, students will research and present descriptive statistics related to immigration. Students will define appropriate quantities in order to model the impact of immigration on their city, state, country. Students will represent the impact of immigration using powerful visual displays of data. In Biology, students will analyze the changes in an ecosystem resulting from changes in population and design solutions for maintaining stable environments. In World Language, students will use authentic materials, research the history and current immigration situation in France. Students will work together to find solutions to the growing problem of the young, disenfranchised, alienated first generation immigrants of today’s France. Culminating Project For the AME culminating project students work collaboratively in a group to apply what they know about immigration, its impact on residents and vulnerable populations. Through research and with virtual reality software, students will create a virtual survival guide for immigrants who might be moving to a new country, city or state with the purpose of helping them navigate the bureaucratic maze. Biology will have students work collaboratively to identify and analyze case studies of ecosystem instability caused by changes in populations, such as immigration. Students apply this knowledge to design and engineer solutions to ecological problems that will be showcased by producing and presenting scientific arguments. Math will have students work collaboratively to create a Public Service Announcement, Website, or Other Presentation using infographics to educate the public about immigration issues. World Languages (French) students will use authentic materials, research the history and current immigration situation by designing a 15 second Instagram video, of 30 seconds. Students will work together to find solutions to the growing problem of the young, disenfranchised, alienated first generation immigrants of today’s France. This unit is brought to you by Gayle Nicholls-Ali (CTE), Merissa Sadler (French), Anthony Carruthers (Math) and Ryan Hainey (Science) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Gregg Witkin.
