There's an App for That! STEM Integrated Project
Mobile devices, like smart phones are changing our lives. Mobile apps are revolutionizing the way we think and communicate. In the palm of our hands, we can access information anywhere. The numbers of apps available are staggering. If you have a tablet or phone, you have an app on it. Creating an app is a new tool for 21st century students. The mobile app market is growing everyday and today's students want to be part of that market. This lesson kicks it up a notch. Beyond making a typical website, students will learn how to construct a simple app using an image editor (Photoshop, Illustrator) and an App builder.
This project will take 4 lessons over the course of seven to eight days, depending on the pace. Graphic design students will design and create a travel app for a tourist site using a digital image editor and an app builder.
Graphic design students will gain app making skills while preparing icons and information for an app. In addition, students will develop problem solving and organizational skills.
The role of Graphic Design is to provide a solid foundation to an app development project.
Relevant careers: App developer, Project manager, Market researcher, Graphic designer, Web designer
In addition to the CTE/STEM focus of the unit/project lessons, educators will find academic lessons in World Languages (French) and Math that supplement the primary core area of study.
This unit is brought to you by GAYLE NICHOLLS-ALI (CTE-Graphic Web Design), MERISSA SADLER (World Languages-French), and JONATHAN KLISH (Math) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Gregg Witkin.
