Should We Save the Trees? Exploring a Local Controversy STEM Integrated Project

In this project, students will answer the essential question: "Should we save the trees?" Specifically, the unit examines the controversial removal by PG&E of old-growth trees in the City of Oroville. In Language Arts, students read informational texts, examine civil disobedience, and argue a position. In Intro to Programming, students will research software development methods and utilize a web crawler to gather information from various sites about tree removal. The Earth Science class will review natural resources, discuss the importance of maintaining a sustainable environment and analyze the environmental impact of cutting down old growth sycamore trees. This unit is brought to you by Cheyanne Taylor-Pacheco (CTE Computer Science), Doug Carroll (ELA) and Kelly Rash (Science) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Gregg Witkin.
