Water World STEM Integrated Project
In this STEM unit, water conservation and stewardship are stressed.
Fresh water is one of our most vital resources, and when our water is polluted it is not only devastating to the environment, but also to human health. The U.S. relies on public water systems to treat and deliver just over 44 billion gallons of clean water each day to our homes, schools and businesses. Much of that water comes from rivers, lakes and other surface water sources.
This interdisciplinary project was designed to be used within a green academy, however, many of the lessons can be used independently. This CTE project uses information about water to show students some of the issues concerning drought, climate change, desalinization, and conservation.
The lessons in this project include making freshwater from salt water, water purification systems, rainwater collection, the concepts of area, perimeter, surface area and volume through the concept of water conservation, reading articles and short stories about current world water conditions, writing science fiction, and creating a public service announcement calling for water conservation.
In addition to the CTE/STEM focus of the unit/project lessons, educators will find academic lessons in math, English/ Language Arts, and physical science.
