Dirty Secrets of the Fashion Industry PBL Project

This project will help students gain some introspect into looking closer into what's in our closets, what and where you shop for clothing, and how we value clothes overall. Lesson 1 - This lesson is an introduction to clothing and the amount of clothes we have today compared to what people used to have. It's also to get students to think about the amount of money that is spent on clothes - to a close approximation - but know that many students will underestimate the amount of money spent on clothes because many of them do not pay for their own clothes. Hopefully a dialogue will happen between student and parent about the money spent on all clothes purchased in the house for all family members. Lesson 2 - Students will explore the rights and responsibility of employers and employees in California. Students will learn what the laws are regarding the industry. Lesson 3 - This lesson breaks down the Fashion Laws for when you buy clothes, including what needs to be on your care labels and more. Who do you contact if you discover unethical practices within the fashion industry? What laws pertain to the fashion industry? Lesson 4 - This is the culminating project where students will create and design items based on what they have learned in the three previous lessons. This lesson is a combination of using social media in a constructive way and finding more resources to learn about the fashion industry on many different levels. The final product is something your students will make based upon prior knowledge of sewing and creating.
